Firearms Training Programs

PPE & Attire

All firearms training programs share the same PPE requirements:

Hats

Brimmed hats protect you from the sun, but more importantly, they protect you from brass raining down from above, getting behind your eye protection and burning your eye or your cheek. What is most important is that your hat has a bill that can be worn snug facing forward covering the top of your eye protection.

Proper Range Attire

Proper range attire should be comfortable and protect you from the elements and hot brass. No low cut shirts for ladies. Often ladies will frequent shooting ranges wearing tank tops or other tops with low cleavage where hot brass loves to get caught. This can cause pain and burns and for the shooter to freak out and cause an unsafe situation. Please wear shirts with high collars that can protect you.

For outdoor classes, consider the seasons climate outside and wear appropriate clothing to keep you warm, cool or dry. We do not cancel courses due to inclement weather unless the conditions are unsafe. Also consider clothing that will protect you from prolonged exposure to the sun.

Closed toed shoes are required to protect you from hot brass burning your feet. For our outdoor courses, we usually shoot on ranges that are surfaces with gravel and lots of dust.

Wrap-around Eye Protection

Wrap-around eye protection is required any time we are handling guns on the range regardless of if we’re doing dry practice or live fire. This eye protection must include side-impact protection. Most prescription glasses do not offer this. We recommend either wearing contacts under sunglasses or finding safety glasses that will go over your prescription glasses. Consider bringing both clear glasses and sunglasses for when the light changes.

Electronic Hearing Protection

Electronic hearing protection is mandatory in our Defensive Firearms Skills Programs. For indoor ranges, we recommend you wear double hearing protection: ear plugs under ear muffs. Electronic hearing protection is essential to protect your hearing while simultaneously allowing you to hear range commands and be cognizant of your surroundings. Most people will use electronic muffs for hearing protection. We recommend Howard Leight Impact Sports and Walker Razor muffs.

If you, like Angelo, don’t like the feeling of ear muffs pressing in on your head all day, for shooting on outdoor ranges, we recommend in-ear electronic hearing protection. They cost more, but they are worth the investment. We recommend the Walker Silencer and Silencer 2.0 in-ear buds.
